In India, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) accounts for five lakhs deaths, more than four times the number of people dying in the USA and Europe due to this disease. COPD is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the country. With an estimated prevalence of more than 57 million in the year 2016, COPD is not just one of the most prevalent diseases in the country but also one of the lesser understood as well. A very significant aspect of COPD that affects almost 75% of the patients, the night-time discomfort, often goes unnoticed by the clinician. Night-time syndrome is so overlooked aspect of COPD that even patients do not report it themselves, resulting in detrimental effects on their overall health. ‘COPD makes it harder to breathe. Fund crunch ails TB programme Bindu Shajan Perappadan NEW DELHI, MARCH 06, 2016 00:00 IST UPDATED: MARCH 06, 2016 05:32 IST

Cut in health budget in December 2014 dealt a blow to programme: activists : Poor funding is hampering the TB programme in India, say health experts. According to them, the slashing of the health budget by 20 per cent by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in December 2014, citing fiscal deficit and under-utilisation of funds, has led to a setback to the programme. In 2015, a joint monitoring mission report, put together by government officials and national and international experts, pointed out that the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) is underfunded. “That didn’t improve things,” said Dr. P.P. Bose, senior consultant, Department of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, National Heart Institute. He said: “Drug resistant tuberculosis is the tip of the ice-berg. What we see and what’s unseen, there is a huge difference. There is an urgent need to educate and do more for the society, accept responsibility for our actions, be accountable an...

Sleep test goes from lab to bedroom Shobita Dhar | TNN | Oct 19, 2014, 06.32 AM IST

Getting a sleep test done at a hospital can give one a sleepless night. Called the polysomnography (PSG) test, it involves a night stay at a hospital, with your head wired to a machine that monitors breathing, heart rate and brain waves. But now you can take this test in the comfort of your bedroom. Most sleep specialists rent out sleep test kits at anything between Rs 2,000-4,000 per night. On the other hand, PSG test, which can only be done at a hospital or a sleep clinic, can cost up to Rs 15,000. Mohammed Azeem, 38, is among those who benefitted from a home kit. A driver in Delhi, Azeem used to snore through the night and wake up tired most mornings. "A couple of times I dozed at the wheel and barely escaped collisions," he says. Azeem took a home test and was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). ResMed is one such home kit available in India and it has recorded 5,000 home studies all over the country in the past year. The device - about the size of an iPhone ...

Breathe deeply with POWERbreathe for more energyBreathe deeply with POWERbreathe for more energy

Deep breathing reaches the deepest depths of your lungs, and by practicing POWERbreathe inspiratory muscle training you’ll be training your respiratory muscles to breathe deeply into your diaphragm, taking in as much air as possible, breathing more in per breath. As you’re breathing in more air per breath, you’re receiving more oxygen into your body, giving you more energy. Senior consultant at the National heart Institute, India, and Founder,  SAANS Foundation  in India, Partha Pratim Bose offers a good example of this, “By deep breathing exercises you breathe more per breath. If you breathe more per breath you expand your lungs more, you receive more oxygen. You will feel more energetic and also save your breaths. For example, if you breathe 250 ml per breath and your requirement is 5 litres then you need 20 breaths per minute. If you breathe more breath say double i.e. 500ml then you will require only ten breaths. So by breathing deep you breathe less and you feel b...

The dangers of untreated sleep apnea If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to heart disease, heart attack, hypertension | Updated: July 21, 2017 4:01 pm 3

Occasional whistling, grunting, snorting and making buzz-saw-like sounds was part of a normal sleeping pattern for Ritu, a 28-year-old PhD student. But it was never a cause of concern for her until she realised that it’s not simple snoring, but a chronic medical condition. “Ritu has never been the best sleeper, but during her recent visit to my place when we shared a bed, I realised that she’s not simply snoring. She repeatedly stopped breathing, then started again with a loud snort that often woke her up and kept me up all night,” shared Ritu’s sister. Ritu was suffering from a common sleep disorder,  obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) , which can pose serious health risks that can even be life-threatening if left undiagnosed and untreated. In OSA, airways become so obstructed that it interrupts breathing reducing the oxygen levels in the body. This happens repetitively and in longer term generates a response from the body which often leads to health problems like high blood pressu...

Smokers also suffer from low self-confidence: Study DECCAN CHRONICLE. | Published Aug 29, 2017, 5:57 am IST

It is a given that smokers are in danger of contracting cancer or cardiovascular complications, but they also seem to be suffering from psychological issues, including low self-confidence. A study, To Choose Life, conducted across major metros, to assess differences in health, mindsets and emotional levels of smokers and non-smokers and also to document the efforts undertaken by smokers to quit smoking and their outcome, reveals that smokers show hypersensitive behaviour which is 200% higher than non-smokers. “Smoking starts as a choice, but eventually becomes a compulsion. The dependency on the habit is so high that even after several attempts to quit, smokers struggle to succeed. Stress and increasing workload are often considered triggers to smoke. Ironically, while it gives you a temporary relief, the long-term impact on mental and physical is serious. Every smoker must consider this while going out for smoke breaks," said Dr Vasunethra Kasargod, a leading Consultant Pulmo...
